Lonar Crater (Lonar Lake)

About Lonar Crater (Lonar Lake)

Lonar Crater, also known as Lonar Lake, was formed around 50,000 years ago by a meteorite impact and is one of the few hypervelocity impact craters in basaltic rock on Earth.

Situated in the Buldhana district of Maharashtra, the crater has a nearly circular shape with a diameter of about 1.8 km. The lake’s water is both saline and alkaline, creating a unique ecosystem that supports rare microorganisms and migratory birds.

Surrounding the crater are ancient temples such as the Daityasudan Temple, Gomukh Temple, and Kamalja Devi Temple, reflecting rich historical and cultural heritage. Lonar Crater attracts scientists, historians, devotees, and travelers alike, making it a fascinating blend of geology, history, and spirituality.
